A great way to secure a door is to use a “mechanical” lock—otherwise known as a coded lock or digi-lock. For the purpose of this article, I am going to stick to digi-locks. They come in many forms, including push-button ones like the image, key fob, and biometric ones.
At KeyEdge locksmiths, we have focused on the push-button versions. Some years ago, the only versions available were at the top end of the cost scale. The Kaba Unican 1000 series is a perfect example. This lock was robust, but the cost increased significantly and out of most budgets. Fitted to thousands of government buildings, I rarely come across them now.
Where to use a digi-lock.
There are so many uses for digital locks. Firstly, you do away with the need for a key. Multiple users can be given the code, which, after being inputted, allows access. This code can easily be changed in the future if required for security. The lock can be used externally and, more commonly, internally—office doors and store cupboards are good examples. Specific versions also offer a latchback facility. This means that it can be held open without inputting the code every time during office hours and at the end of the day, released and the need to input the code for access again.
What is a reliable Digi-lock?
My preference is the “Lockey” digital lock. Again, it’s not cheap, but after fitting, there will be no need to ever replace it—as it is so reliable. To operate these locks, you input a code of four, five or six separate buttons. Most of these locks ( not the Kaba Unican) use a non-consequential code. This means it does not matter in which order you input the code. It could be Y1234 or 4231A if that makes sense.
What to avoid
Many cheap digital locks are on the market. These can be 1/4 of the cost of the Lockey. They may offer longevity if used infrequently and not on an external door. In my experience, though, the adage “buy cheap, buy twice” is very accurate with digi-locks.
